The term “Hiab” is derived from “Hydrauliska Industri AB,” the Swedish company that originally developed this type of equipment. The term Hiab has become consistently used to refer to a lorry mounted crane or lorry loader. There are two types of Hiab – rigid and artic.
What's the difference between a Rigid HIAB and an Artic Hiab?
A rigid Hiab is a unified vehicle combining a truck, trailer, and a lorry-mounted crane within a single, unyielding structure. Rigid Hiabs exhibit greater manoeuvrability, adept at navigating tight spaces compared to the alternative setup involving a truck pulling a detached trailer. The crane on a rigid Hiab can be positioned either at the front or rear of the vehicle, leading to designations such as “rear mount” or “front-mounted” Hiab accordingly.
To augment the load-carrying capacity of a rigid Hiab beyond what its trailer can accommodate, an additional trailer can be attached, commonly referred to as a “wagon and drag.”
In contrast, an artic Hiab is comprised of a truck with the lorry-mounted crane located behind the cab. These trucks can operate independently or tow various types of trailers, showcasing remarkable versatility. Artic Hiabs are even capable of executing tandem lifts, a complex operation involving two trucks equipped with Hiabs collaborating to hoist oversized loads, demanding exceptional skill and precision from the operators.
Over the years, Hiabs have undergone significant advancements and have become indispensable tools for haulage companies. Many modern Hiabs can rival mobile cranes in terms of both their lifting capacities and their reach capabilities. We continually invest in our fleet of lorry-mounted cranes, enabling us to offer innovative solutions for handling complex and unconventional loads. This includes heavy lift cranes, long-reach cranes, and those equipped with 4×4 capabilities.
Why use a Hiab crane?
Hiabs have completely upgraded the haulage industry, as they can be used to move containers, generators, or other items from one space to another within a site and they can deliver goods to the site as well as lift them on and off the truck which can often reduce the need for a separate mobile crane.
What are the advantages of Hiab cranes?
Time and Efficiency
Efficiency is of utmost importance in the construction industry, and cranes play a vital role in streamlining operations for timely project completion. Engaging crane hire services grants construction companies access to well-maintained and regularly inspected cranes that meet stringent safety standards, helping expedite project timelines. Synergy Haulage also provide comprehensive insurance coverage, reducing potential delays due to unforeseen issues. Experienced crane operators further enhance efficiency by minimising downtime and ensuring smooth compliance with safety regulations.
Access
Hiab trucks, equipped with versatile hydraulic loading crane systems, offer unparalleled access capabilities in various industries. These specialised vehicles provide exceptional access to heavy or bulky loads, making them indispensable in construction, logistics, and transportation. Hiab cranes can reach over obstacles, extend to impressive heights, and manoeuvre with precision, enabling them to access tight or challenging spaces that traditional equipment might struggle to reach. Their adaptability and efficiency make Hiabs a top choice when accessibility is a priority, ensuring that tasks are completed swiftly and effectively while minimising disruptions and optimising workflow.
Price
Hiab equipment offers a remarkable combination of functionality and cost-effectiveness, making them an excellent choice for businesses seeking value in their operations. Hiabs, with their versatility and lifting capabilities, provide the convenience of multiple tools rolled into one, which can significantly reduce equipment acquisition costs. Moreover, the ability to handle various tasks with a single piece of equipment minimises the need for multiple specialised machines, resulting in savings on maintenance and operational expenses. In essence, Hiab equipment represents an investment that not only offers substantial functionality but also delivers exceptional value for businesses looking to optimise their resources and budgets.
What can a Hiab lift?
Hiabs, renowned for their versatility and robust lifting capabilities, are truly indispensable in a wide range of industries. Their adaptability is evident in their ability to effortlessly handle diverse tasks, from lifting containers of all sizes to facilitating the movement of site accommodation units. Hiabs excel in hoisting generators, compressors, and various industrial machinery like forklifts and mounted forklifts with precision and ease. They’re equally adept at transporting and positioning cranes and crane parts, as well as handling industrial materials efficiently. Additionally, Hiabs are the go-to choice for lifting boats, wheeled plant machinery, hot tubs, and large kitchen equipment such as pizza ovens. Their strength extends to the transportation of mobile homes and static caravans, showcasing their unrivaled utility across a spectrum of heavy lifting and logistical challenges.
